Mid-July is the stretch where you do not need a plan, you just need to know what is already happening. Two of the best things this weekend cost nothing: a film on the grass at Officers' Square once it gets dark enough, and The Halluci Nation on Saturday night in the same spot. Here is the weekend.

This weekend in Freddy (July 17-19)
|
Sat Jul 18 · 6:00 PM · Free
The Halluci Nation
Officers' Square, 575 Queen Street · 6:00 to 10:00 PM
A Polaris-winning, Juno-winning electronic group playing outdoors, downtown, for free. Four hours of it. Bring a chair, get there early, and do not overthink it. This is the one to build Saturday around.
|
|
Fri Jul 17 · 9:48 PM · Free
Under the Stars: Stone of Destiny
Officers' Square, 575 Queen Street
The city waits for actual dusk to start this one, which in mid-July means quarter to ten. A 2008 caper about four students who lifted the Stone of Scone out of Westminster Abbey. Free, outdoors, and worth staying up for.
|
|
Fri & Sat Jul 17-18 · 7:30 PM
The Laramie Project
Fredericton Playhouse, 686 Queen Street · $30 to $35 plus HST
Birch & Teal Productions take on the verbatim play built from interviews with the people of Laramie, Wyoming after Matthew Shepard's murder. Two nights only. The Playhouse flags it 15 and up for strong language and violent content, and they are right to.
|
|
Fri Jul 17 · 5:00 PM
Mela Melna Da: Rupinder Handa Live
NBEX, Capital Exhibit Centre · 5:00 to 10:00 PM
A teeyan da mela, the Punjabi summer celebration, with Rupinder Handa headlining. Five hours at the Exhibition grounds.
|
|
Sat Jul 18 · 7:00 PM
Joel Miller and Rodrigo Simões
The Cap, 362 Queen Street · 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Saxophone and guitar, two hours, in a room the right size for it. If The Halluci Nation is the big loud outdoor thing, this is the other end of the same Saturday.
|
|
Sun Jul 19 · 1:00 PM
Wood Carving Workshop
Kings Landing · 1:00 to 4:00 PM
Three hours, real tools, out at Kings Landing. A good Sunday if the weekend has been loud enough already.

The week ahead
|
Fri-Sun Jul 24-26 · Next weekend
New Brunswick Highland Games Festival
Government House grounds and Officers' Square
Buy tickets this week, not next. Friday night is Mary Frances Leahy and Jimmy Rankin. Saturday is piping, drumming, Highland dancing and the heavy events by day, then Vishtèn, The Stanfields and Joel Plaskett Emergency at night. The full day-by-day schedule is still landing, so watch their site.

Officers' Square has something on most nights through the summer, and almost all of it is free. The full calendar, updated daily, lives at frederictondirectory.com/events.

Featured Friday business

Mr Fix It All
380 St Marys Street, Fredericton · (506) 897-4224
This is road trip season, which is also the season you find out what your car has been quietly putting up with since March. Mr Fix It All is an independent shop on St Marys Street, on the north side, and the kind of place that runs on word of mouth rather than advertising. No website, no posted hours, just a phone number that someone answers.
If that is your shop: the listing is yours to claim, free, and you can add your hours so people stop guessing.
|
|
New in the directory
Eight roofing and exterior companies joined the directory this week, which tells you exactly what time of year it is. Among them: The Country Roofer and Benchmark Building and Renovations.
If you have been putting off a quote until the weather turns, the weather is not going to warn you first.

Hit reply
Every event above was checked against the venue's own page this week, because a wrong start time is worse than no listing at all. If you spot something we got wrong, or something we missed, hit reply and tell me. I read every one.
See you out there, Lesli
