May 2-4 in Freddy

Share:FacebookXLinkedInEmailForward to a Freddy friend

It's May 2-4, the first proper long weekend of the year in Canada. Monday is a stat, most of the retail strip is closed, the patios open early, and the Boyce Market is going to be busy. Below: the long-weekend lineup, what's coming next week (a national dance competition lands at the Convention Centre), and a Northside spotlight on the new Happy Baker location with a shake shop right down the street.

This long weekend in Freddy (May 16-18)

  • Sat May 16

    Boyce Farmers Market

    665 George Street

7 AM to 1 PM, every Saturday year-round. The long-weekend market is the busiest one before peak summer. Coffee, fresh produce, prepared food, dozens of local makers. Park early or walk in from Wilmot.

  • Sun May 17

    Quiet long-weekend Sunday

Patios open, most cafes on normal hours, most independent retail open. Good day for the river trail out from Officer's Square, a paddle from Small Craft Aquatic Centre on Brunswick, or a Picaroons Roundhouse pint on the deck if the sky cooperates.

  • Mon May 18

    Victoria Day (stat holiday)

Government, banks, NB Liquor, and most independent retail closed. Boyce Market is Saturdays only, so that's done by Monday. Restaurants and breweries open at their discretion, check social before you go.

The week ahead (May 19-24)

  • Tue May 19

    Back to normal

Hours, garbage day, banks, all back. Quiet midweek is a good time to try a restaurant on the directory you haven't been to. 188 verified listings and counting.

  • Wed-Sat May 20-24

On The Floor dance competition (OTF), Fredericton

Fredericton Convention Centre, 670 Queen Street

A national-circuit competition lands in Fredericton for four days. Public can watch most sessions in person, livestream is available on the OTF site. If you have a dancer in the family, or a friend at Dance Fredericton, Capital Dance Co, or The Dance Connection, this is the week to show up.

  • Looking ahead

    Flourish Festival May 29-30

Next Friday's issue will be a Flourish Festival issue. If you have a band or art show in the lineup and want a featured spot, hit reply this week.

New in the directory

  • The Shake Shed Freddy

    230 Main Street, Northside

Two doors down from the new Happy Baker. Shakes and a short menu, online ordering at order.online. The Northside lunch loop is starting to look real: bake, shake, walk it off.

  • Picaroons Roundhouse

Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge, north end

Long-weekend patio on the river. Open Saturday and Sunday standard hours; Vic Day Monday is at their discretion, so check before you cross the bridge.
