New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD)
The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) is a public college dedicated entirely to fine craft and design, based at 457 Queen Street in downtown Fredericton. With more than 80 years of history, it is one of the few institutions in Canada where you can study craft as a career. The college has occupied its Queen Street home, a converted 19th-century brick warehouse, since 1980. Students start with a Foundation Visual Arts certificate, offered in person and online, then move into two-year diploma programs: Ceramics, Fashion Design, Jewellery/Metal Arts, Textile Design, Graphic Design, Photography and Videography, 3D Digital Design, and Wabanaki Visual Arts, a program grounded in Indigenous artistic traditions. Graduates can continue into Advanced Studio Practice or complete a Bachelor of Applied Arts through a shared pathway with UNB. Day to day, the building runs as a set of working studios where students learn by making, and the college puts real emphasis on preparing artists to earn a living from their work, with entrepreneurial training built into the programs. For the general public, the George Fry Gallery on site shows student and professional work throughout the year, with recent exhibitions including a tactile show developed with Craft NB and the CNIB to make art accessible by touch. The annual Grad Show each spring is the best single event for seeing what comes out of the place, and the college opens its studios for tours during downtown evening markets. Anyone curious about studying, or just about what is on the gallery walls, can walk past on Queen Street and look in.
