The Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF) is the city's settlement agency for immigrants and newcomers, operating from 28 Saunders Street downtown since its founding in 1974. Settlement staff walk newcomers through the practical first steps: registering for Medicare, filing taxes, banking, finding housing, and navigating daily life in the city. Language instruction helps adults build English skills, and the Newcomer Employment Services for Adults (NESA) program pairs job seekers with employment coaches, before and after arrival, to translate their skills and credentials into the Canadian labour market. Families with school-aged kids are supported through the Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program, which places settlement workers directly in Fredericton-area English and French immersion schools. Youth aged 13 to 29 have their own programming, a place to make friends, share experiences with other immigrant youth, and get to know the community.
